Tyler never knows what’s coming next, only that the next card will decide it. Before long, he isn’t watching Derek anymore. He’s watching the deck.
What surprises him most isn’t how much the discipline stings—it’s how badly he wants to prove he can take it. Every correction feels less like a punishment and more like another chance to show he belongs there. Derek notices. He doesn’t offer praise, only the faintest hint that very few boys ever make it this far.
